What is Nia?
Nia is a sensory based movement practice that leads to health, wellness and fitness. It empowers people of all shapes and sizes by connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit.
Every experience can be adapted to individual needs and abilities.
How does Nia work?
Nia draws from disciplines of the marital arts, dance arts and healing arts. Every class offers a unique combination of 52 moves that correspond with the main areas of the body: the base, core, and upper extremities. Stiff beginners and highly fit athletes alike can adapt Nia to meet their needs by choosing from three intensity levels.

About the instructor:
Andrea Hersh is an artist who loves to dance. She has found that there are many similarities to Nia and art. Her paintings, like Nia, have a sense of form, freedom and movement. Andrea's goal as a Nia instructor is the same she has as an art teacher: helping the student sense rhythm, precision, balance, space and play.

Join Chef and local Restauranteur, LJ Goldstock, Dr. Stram and Stram Center's nurse practitioner, Jenn Mager for a cooking demo and tasting to learn how the Paleo diet can be your vehicle to meeting your health goals and changing your life.
Food is medicine. The Paleo diet is a lifestyle modification that can help reduce the need for medication, control weight and improve overall health. LJ will share his personal experience with his health and together with Jenn will teach how the paleo lifestyle can help patients who are diabetic, pre-diabetic, hypertensive, overweight or those of us who are just tired of being on unnecessary medication or not able to lose weight.
LJ will cook up some amazing food for his audience to taste that will surely demonstrate not only the enjoyment of the paleo diet but how easy it can be to prepare. Cooking tips to effect a successful meal plan together with Jenn's easy to understand medical guidance will surely open the door to a new life style that will add health and vitality to anyone ready to enter! Plus! we will enjoy organic wine and hear what Bonterra has to say about the value of choosing organic!

With Eric Sharer's extensive culinary arts training together with his expertise in nutrition, he will provide one on one hands-on cooking instruction in a calm and casual learning environment at our Delmar location. Instruction will include include knife/culinary skills to make your time in the kitchen more efficient and enjoyable. Each class will last 1.5 hours and all the food prepared will be yours to enjoy and take home. Eric will take care of the grocery shopping and work with you to plan an individualized meal based on your unique nutritional needs.
Cost for one person: $160 plus the cost of groceries
Cost for two people: $200 ($100 per person) plus the cost of groceries
Cost for three people: $240 ($80 per person) plus the cost of groceries
Cost for four people: $280 ($70 per person) plus the cost of groceries

2015 Reiki Certification Class Schedule:
Each class offered is a one day workshop. Each student will be given a course manual and a certificate of completion at the reiki level attended. Classes limited to 8 students.

Every Wednesday evening at 7:30 pm, the Center will offer free guided meditation sessions. The free meditation sessions are available at The Center to practice and experience the deep state of meditation. These sessions serve as an introduction for beginners as well as a practice for experienced individuals in the cultivation of clarity and mindfulness.
Guided Meditation sessions are led by Jim Whiting, the Center's certified Kripalu Yoga teacher and Michelle Carpenter (see Michelle's brief bio. below.)

Michelle is a lifelong resident of the Albany area and an enthusiastic member of the local yoga community who has been practicing since 1988. She is an adept yoga practitioner with experience in various styles of yoga and meditation techniques including Jivamukti, Bikrim, Kundalini, and Kripalu. Michelle has studied with renowned teachers Mukunda Stiles, Nishcela Joy Devi, Ray Crist and Sudha/Caroline Lundeen. Michelle is currently leading and assisting with teaching Shitali Karana and Mantra meditation at the Stram Center for Integrative Medicine. Jim is honored to have her as an assistant.
Body Mind Spirit Yoga Classes begin with mindful centering through guided breathing exercises and meditation. Seated stretches provide a gentle but thorough warm-up readying students for a natural flow of poses. Classes include a well-rounded variety of yoga postures: standing, seated, kneeling, twists, backbends, supine and inversions. Students are encouraged to listen to and respect the wisdom of their own body. Appropriate modifications and extensions are offered to ensure your personal experience is both safe and challenging. Gentle Yoga ~ A kind and gentle gift to yourself, good for beginners and those coming back to yoga after a long break or after an injury. This warm and supportive class moves at a comfortable pace allowing time to fully enjoy each pose.
FEES: Monday: $10 drop in;Thursday and Saturday classes: $15 drop in; $40/3 week session; $72/6 week session

About the Instructor: Jim Whiting is a certified Kripalu Yoga instructor. A lifetime resident of the Albany area, Jim studied Yoga at the Kripalu Center in Massachusetts, meditation and Yoga philosophy at the American Meditation Institute in Averill Park, NY and the psychology of the Bhagavad Gita at the Hindu Temple in Loudonville, NY. Jim has been a practitioner of Yoga, Meditation and Yoga philosophy since 1996. The Center is honored to have Jim teach yoga.
