You could say that medicine is in my blood. I grew up tagging along behind my mom to round on her patients, wanting to practice with her stethoscope.

To this day she is an incredible physician, compassionate provider, and role model. I had the desire to help people, but wasn’t clear what avenue I would take. I went into my undergraduate schooling with a love of sports medicine and obtained my Bachelors of Science degree in athletic training. During my studies however, I knew that I wanted to delve deeper into my true passion. My desire to diagnose, treat, and expand my clinical knowledge became the catalyst to apply to physician assistant school. After countless hours of studying and hard work I graduated as the class valedictorian.

From there I launched into life as a physician assistant working in hospital medicine where I have been honored to work in institutions such as Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. I was privileged to care for patients during some of the most trying times of their life. Through these experiences I came to realize that something was missing for me; I wanted to incorporate balance amidst the chaos. My love for the patients and families I cared for also revealed that we often wear blinders as health care providers, focusing on the disease rather than the patient. I struggled internally with discrepancies in the current medical paradigm. Were we not supposed to heal, treat and prevent suffering? There had to be a more holistic approach.

It was then that I enrolled in the year long program at The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and completed my certification as a certified holistic health coach. During this program I was exposed to Functional Medicine. The Functional Medicine model shifts the focus from disease centered, to one that is patient centered, empowering both the practitioner and the patient to work together in a carefully crafted partnership. I believe, to truly take loving care of our patients we need to evaluate them as the sum of their being. This means the foods they are eating, their disease states, lifestyle, and the daily stress they carry. I believe true health is more than just a snapshot visit in a hospital or office setting, and to help patients we need to start from the ground up. It begins with compassion, empathy, partnership, and trust.

I am honored to be joining the Stram Center Team, where patient focused care, excellence, and collaboration are at the heart of this amazing center.
